Polystichum tsus-simense has also been referred to more commonly as the Korean Rock Fern. Korean rock fern is a delightful little fern perfect for adding texture to shady spots in the garden. Its shiny dark green fronds are a dazzling contrast to lighter colors, such as chartreuse or golden hostas. Korean rock fern makes a wonderful groundcover and will slowly spread through your garden. The Korean rock fern is just as happy indoors in a container with other shade dwellers.
This is an excellent small scale fern with lush dark green foliage in a dense mounding habit. Outdoors it should be planted under shade trees and large shrubs to cover exposed soil. The Korean Rock Fern works well with smaller woodland perennials and in containers, indoors or out.
This fern is fast growing to 12 in. tall, 12 in. wide or more and enjoys full to partial sun. It also requires wet or constantly moist soil. Just like many ferns, it prefers an abundance of organic matter in the soil, so be sure to add compost at planting time. If outdoors the Korean rock fern grows best in regions with cool summers. Hardy from zones 7-9.
